ELGS Open Guest Lecture on “US Politics and Society: The Case of D. Trump”
The European Law and Governance School (ELGS) is pleased to announce an open guest lecture titled “US Politics and Society: The Case of D. Trump”, on Monday, 9 February 2026, from 17:00 to 19:00 (Athens Time). This lecture will offer an in-depth exploration of the political and social conditions that shaped the rise—and resurgence—of Donald J. Trump in contemporary American politics.
The purpose of the lecture is to analyze the basic factors in US politics and society that led to the political and electoral dynamics of D. Trump. D. Trump is not a coincidental phenomenon, as he is just the second case in US politics of a sitting President who faces a defeat in the Presidential Election process and manages to accomplish such a comeback. Therefore, the lecture will emphasize the ideological and structural transformations that took place in the US political parties (Republicans and Democrats), along with fundamental changes in the US economy, democracy, and society. These political and economic evolutions had as a result the development of a social alliance constituted by the Evangelical Christians, a part of the urban class (Silicon
Valley), veterans, white working class (Rust Belt) and rural strata which seems to promote D. Trump’s political and electoral dynamics.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Chrysanthos D. Tassis, Associate Professor of Political Sociology (Democritus University of Thrace), and Visiting Scholar in the United States, with expertise in American political thought and electoral dynamics.
